The Greek Traditional Walnut Pie (Karidopita)

How often do your kids want to eat something sweet? Mine the whole day, everyday. After a long negotiating period we finally reached an agreement. It is going to be twice per week. And these two days, I try to offer them something sweet, but healthy.
You should make this Walnut Pie for many reasons: 1. It takes only 5 minutes of your precious time, 2. You don’t need to wash a mixer when you are finished, and 3. You will get your kids eat WALNUTS (rich in omega 3 fatty acids). The Mediterranean diet emphasizes on eating nuts and seeds. And it is scientifically proven, that they are highly essential, as they help our kids maintain a normal blood pressure, help reduce their cholesterol level, reduce inflammation and keep their heart healthy.
So, when it comes to satisfying your children’s sweet tooth, make this walnut pie and let your kids enjoy it without guilt.

Portion: 15 medium size pieces

Ingredients
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 ½ cup granulated sugar
2 cups walnuts (finely chopped)
1 cup low fat milk
4 eggs
20 gr. (0.7oz) Baking Powder
1 teaspoon Baking Soda
1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
½ teaspoon Ground Cloves
For the syrup
4 cups granulated sugar
3 ½ cups water
How to do it
Add the ingredients for the syrup to a small saucepan. Bring to a boil and immediately remove from heat. Set aside to cool.
Preheat oven to 170* C (338* F) Fan.
Whisk the eggs in a big bowl. Then add the milk and stir. Then the rest of the ingredients and mix well with a spoon. Do not use a kitchen mixer.
Pure the mixture in a baking Pyrex (25-30 cm. diameter) and bake for 35-40 minutes.
When the pie is ready, remove from oven and pour cold syrup over it.
Allow it to cool completely.
